T-80U m85 as produced by the Kharkov tank plant in the Ukraine. The history is
that Khrakov, known for producing the diesel powered T-64 series of tanks, was forced to
produce the turbine powered T-80U initially while making several proposals for a
dieselized version. Only 45 T-80U's were made at Kharkov before they won approval to
make what became the T-80UD. The Khakov T-80U'd differ from the standard T-80U in
that they have Kontact-1 ERA and the Kharkov produced Commander's Remotely Operated Weapon
Station. A "standard" T-80U, as produced by the Omsk tank plant has 4
tubes to put a manually operated AAMG into and have the Kontact-5 ERA. The
"Omsk" version is currently best represented by SP
Designs kit 216.This kit comes with: 1 piece correct upper hull, two
piece hollow cast turret with correct mantlet, resin 3 piece barrel, rudimentary turret
interior pieces including a breech block and optics, correct commanders station, and many
superior details. The upper hull is correct for a early T-80U, specifically the m85,
including the channels on either side behind the drivers hatch.
